WASHINGTON, D.C. - Flags across the United States are being flown at half-staff to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

President Joe Biden ordered that flags be flown at half-staff for 30 days to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

This directive means that all U.S. flags on federal public buildings and grounds will be at half-staff through to January 28, 2025, including during Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20, 2025.

According to Title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1 (The United States Flag Code): "The flag shall be flown at half-staff 30 days from the death of the President or a former President; 10 days from the day of death of the Vice President,"

This practice was enacted by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 to signify national mourning.

Biden also designated January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning for Carter.
