PLAINS, Georgia - The oldest living former U.S. President  Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100.

Chip Carter, his son, confirmed that the former president died at his home in Plains, Georgia about 3:45 p.m., the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Carter had been in hospice care for nearly two years at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Carter's presidency from 1977 to 1981 was mired by domestic and international challenges including high inflation, an energy crisis, and the Iran hostage crisis.

He achieved notable successes with the Camp David Accords, establishing diplomatic relations with China, and signing the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union. Despite these accomplishments, economic troubles and international crises contributed to his defeat in the 1980 election by Ronald Reagan.

Post-presidency, Carter's humanitarian efforts earned him widespread respect. He founded The Carter Center in 1982, focusing on human rights, conflict resolution, and disease eradication. His work with Habitat for Humanity, where he has volunteered to build homes for the underprivileged, and his efforts in international diplomacy led to his receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter is also a prolific author, with over 30 books to his name, covering topics from politics to poetry.

He was married to Rosalynn Carter for 77 years until her passing in 2023, and they had four children. Carter's commitment to service continued well into his later years, teaching Sunday school and engaging in philanthropy.
