Three Florida panther kittens—designated K525, K526, and K527—have survived their earliest weeks, defying the harsh realities faced by their species.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) panther team recently completed health assessments of the trio, born to a female panther known as FP269, offering a glimmer of hope for the endangered population.
The assessments, conducted when kittens are between two and four weeks old, involve a meticulous process. Using data from the mother’s GPS collar, biologists track her movements, waiting for her to leave the den to hunt. The team then swoops in to examine the litter: each kitten is sexed, weighed, dewormed, microchipped for identification, and sampled for genetic analysis via a small biopsy.

This hands-on approach has been a cornerstone of FWC’s efforts, with the team evaluating 527 kittens over the past 33 years. The data collected has shed light on critical aspects of panther ecology, including litter sizes, sex ratios, and den site preferences.
For FP269, this litter marks a bittersweet milestone. Last season, her three kittens met a tragic fate, likely falling prey to a black bear, based on the FWC team’s findings.
