ORLANDO, Florida –The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) of severe thunderstorms across East Central Florida today, mainly near and north of I-4 from midday through evening. A Marginal Risk means isolated severe storms are possible, though coverage and intensity are expected to remain limited. NWS Melbourne Severe Thunderstorm Graphic According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, showers and storms will increase in coverage this afternoon as the sea breeze develops and moves inland, with peak coverage expected between roughly 2–8 pm as sea breezes collide near or west of I-95 and east of Orlando. Showers and storms will taper off through the evening. The main hazards during peak storm hours this afternoon include: Frequent lightning – When thunder roars, go indoors! Gusty/damaging winds up to 60 mph (isolated in stronger storms) Locally heavy downpours (1-3+ inches in 30-60 minutes possible, with isolated higher amounts) leading to minor flooding in poor drainage areas and ponding on roadways. Small to coin-size hail possible in stronger storms. A brief/weak tornado cannot be entirely ruled out (low chance). An area of low pressure may form over the northeast Gulf of America this weekend and has a low chance (20%) of developing into a tropical system as it moves slowly near the southeast U.S. by early next week. It is too early to determine the extent of any impacts across Central Florida. Residents and visitors should monitor the forecast for updates.
