TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Tropical Storm Bertha is located in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The system has shown some strengthening overnight and now has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, though it remains somewhat disorganized due to northerly wind shear. NHC forecasters expect gradual strengthening as it drifts slowly north-northwestward before turning more westward toward Louisiana. Much of the northeast Gulf Coast will experience peripheral impacts rather than a direct landfall. Storm surge of 1–3 feet remains possible for Apalachee Bay and the Florida Big Bend. NWS Tallahassee – Flooding Rain Risk (Today through Wednesday) Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected today into Wednesday, especially across the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend, southeast Alabama, and southwest Georgia. Some storms may produce gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall. Isolated flash flooding and ponding of water on roadways are possible. Lightning remains a concern with all thunderstorms. Beneficial rainfall is expected to help ease ongoing dry conditions. Surf heights are expected to build to 4–9 feet, bringing dangerous rip currents and localized beach erosion.
