Florida Department of Health Issues Rabies Alert In Sarasota County

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County is monitoring rabies activity among wild animals after confirming a single case in a raccoon killed Tuesday at the corner of Grove Point Boulevard and Proctor Road.

The positive test, reported July 21, 2026, indicates rabies may currently be circulating in the local wild animal population, officials said. Residents and visitors are being advised to remain cautious around wildlife.

Wild animals such as raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes carry a higher risk of transmitting the virus to people and pets. Anyone exposed should seek prompt medical care, as post-exposure treatment effectively prevents the disease.

To reduce the risk of exposure, health officials recommend the following steps:

• Keep pets and livestock up to date on rabies vaccinations according to a veterinarian’s schedule.
• Supervise pets closely, keep them on a leash, and secure livestock on your property. If an animal bites a pet or livestock, contact a veterinarian immediately and notify Sarasota Animal Services at 941-861-9501.
• Avoid all contact with wild or stray animals. Do not feed them or leave outdoor pet food, open garbage cans or other attractants accessible.
• If bitten or scratched by any animal, seek medical attention right away and report the incident to DOH-Sarasota at 941-861-2873.
• Never attempt to adopt or bring wild animals into the home; contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator instead.
• Call Sarasota Animal Services at 941-861-9501 to remove stray animals from neighborhoods.
• Seal homes, schools and other occupied buildings to prevent wildlife, including bats, from entering spaces shared with people or pets.
