LAKELAND, Florida – Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, has announced a voluntary recall of its 10-ounce packages of frozen GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries because they may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28, a Shiga toxin-producing strain of bacteria.
The blueberries were distributed to Publix stores in eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Consuming the product could cause serious illness. Symptoms of E. coli O145 infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Most healthy individuals recover within a week, but young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a potentially life-threatening complication.
12 confirmed cases of E. coli O145:H28 infections have been reported between May 11 and June 5, 2026, linked to consumption of the recalled GreenWise frozen blueberries.
Publix is advising customers who purchased frozen GreenWise Organic Blueberries on or before July 3, 2026, to check their freezers. If you have the affected lot:
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. is working with regulatory authorities and retailers to remove the affected product from the market. The company has instructed all customers to isolate the lot, stop distribution, and notify any downstream recipients.
“Food safety remains a top priority for Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. We are committed to protecting consumers and are conducting a thorough investigation into the source of the presumptive finding.”
