Severe Thunderstorms, Tornado Risk For Central Florida

ORLANDO, Florida – The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening across East Central Florida.

Scattered to locally numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop inland this afternoon and shift eastward toward the coast and offshore through the afternoon and evening. Storms may produce frequent to excessive lightning, gusty to locally damaging winds, torrential rain, small hail, and isolated heavy rainfall amounts of 1–3 inches. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out in the strongest storms.

The main hazards during peak storm hours this afternoon and evening include:

• Frequent to excessive lightning
• Locally heavy / torrential rainfall (1–3 inches) leading to minor flooding in poor drainage areas
• Wind gusts of 40–60 mph (isolated stronger gusts possible)
• Small hail up to 1 inch possible
• Brief tornado cannot be ruled out (very low probability)

Exercise caution at Atlantic beaches due to possible rip currents. Swim near lifeguards and never enter the surf alone. Stay cool and hydrated with heat indices reaching 100–105°F.
