Former University of Alabama President Stuart R. Bell Selected As University of Florida Sole Finalist

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Presidential Search Advisory Committee has unanimously recommended Dr. Stuart R. Bell as the sole finalist to become the university’s next president, university officials announced.

Bell, who served as president of the University of Alabama for a decade, emerged as the clear choice following a national search. If approved, he would lead one of the nation’s top public research universities and build on its recent momentum toward elite status among public institutions.

During his tenure at Alabama, Bell was credited with boosting national rankings, tightening academic standards, growing enrollment, elevating athletics to championship levels, and overseeing major campus modernization and expansion projects. Retention rates improved significantly, and the university attained prestigious R1 research classification.

Bell also brought extensive experience in collegiate athletics governance. He served as president of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) from 2023 to 2025 and on the conference’s Executive Committee from 2021 to 2025, collaborating with SEC member schools, the commissioner, federal lawmakers, and the NCAA on key issues facing college sports.

Before leading Alabama, Bell held senior academic roles at Louisiana State University as provost and professor of engineering, and at the University of Kansas as dean of the School of Engineering and professor of mechanical engineering.

A respected researcher in natural gas and combustion engines, he was inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 2023. He earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and B.S. in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University and holds memberships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the National Society of Professional Engineers.
