Flooding, Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain For South Florida

MIAMI, Florida – The National Weather Service in Miami forecasts showers and thunderstorms developing and expanding across the eastern half of South Florida this afternoon, Friday, May 29, 2026.

Heavy rainfall, gusty winds up to 40 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and localized flooding are possible, especially along the east coast metro corridor.

Slow-moving storms are expected to bring the highest impacts along the east coast urban areas from West Palm Beach through Fort Lauderdale and Miami into the evening hours.

High rain chances are forecast especially across the eastern half of South Florida this afternoon and evening. The highest probabilities include 78% in Homestead, 71% in Miami, 66% in Fort Lauderdale, 67% in Palmdale and Clewiston, with lower chances on the west coast (11% in Naples).

Dangerously high heat indices are forecast this afternoon across much of South Florida. Values will peak as high as 103°F in Miami and Homestead, 102°F in Naples, Immokalee, Everglades City, and Fort Lauderdale, 101°F in Buckhead Ridge, 100°F in La Belle and West Palm Beach, and 99°F in Flamingo. Residents should take extra precautions against heat-related illnesses.

Heat Exhaustion versus Heat Stroke

Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
