Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain, Flood Risk For Central Florida

, Florida – The National Service in Melbourne continues to warn of one more gusty and rainy day across East on Thursday, April 9, 2026, bringing ongoing weather impacts including strong winds, high surf, dangerous rip currents, beach erosion, and a Marginal (Level 1 of 4) risk of localized flooding especially along the coast from persistent heavy rain bands.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue across the Florida Peninsula today, with the potential for locally heavy rainfall especially near the coast. Winds will be a little less strong but still gusty, especially near the coast, into tonight, WESH 2 reports.

Increased coastal impacts including high surf and minor beach erosion are expected to continue through the weekend.

The NWS warns of the following ongoing hazards:

  • Strong east-northeast winds sustained 15-25 mph with gusts 30-35 mph (highest near the coast) (Wind Advisory in effect along the coast through 7 PM)
  • High surf with 8-12 foot waves, minor beach erosion, and high risk of dangerous rip currents at all central Florida Atlantic beaches (High Surf Advisory)
  • Locally heavy rainfall with Marginal (Level 1) risk of localized flooding especially along the coast (through 7 PM Thursday)
  • Continued risk of showers and thunderstorms

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the strongest impacts are expected today and tonight. Beach-goers are strongly advised to stay out of the due to life-threatening rip currents. High rip current risk continues through the weekend.
