TAMPA, Florida – Verizon Wireless customers across the United States experienced a major service outage on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, that left many unable to make calls, send texts, or access mobile data for several hours. The disruption began around 9 a.m. ET and peaked with over 100,000 user reports on outage tracking site Downdetector, according to CNET, forcing many devices into “SOS mode,” allowing only emergency calls. The outage affected major areas including New York City, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, and parts of Florida, prompting concerns about impacts on 911 services in some locations, reports Mashable.
Verizon confirmed the issue in a statement on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry. They expect more from us,” the company posted from its @VerizonNews account. “We are working non-stop and making progress. Our teams will continue to work through the night until service is restored for all impacted customers.” The telecom giant added that it would “make this right” by providing account credits to affected users, with details to be shared soon.
The outage was resolved by late Wednesday night, according to TechRadar. “The outage has been resolved. If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network,” the company stated. Reports of affected customers varied, with Downdetector logging peaks of around 177,000 reports, though estimates suggest it impacted hundreds of thousands to millions of users, per Bloomberg,
Customer frustration was evident on social media, with users complaining about lost productivity and unreliable service.
Verizon, a leading wireless provider, has experienced similar outages before, but this one’s nationwide scope drew significant attention.
