ESTERO, Florida – A suspicious package reported at University Village, an off-campus shopping and apartment complex adjacent to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), prompted a response from local law enforcement on Thursday morning, leading to temporary closures and alerts for students and residents.
According to FGCU’s initial Eagle Alert issued around 9:41 a.m., the package was reported at University Village near local eateries and businesses. As a precautionary measure, the entrance to South Village (SOVI) freshman housing was closed, and the university urged the community to avoid the area. University Village is located near FGCU in Estero and serves as a hub for students and locals.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), including its Bomb Squad, 4th Precinct Deputies, Aviation Technical Support Unit (ATSU), and fire department personnel, responded to the scene. The Fort Myers Police Department also assisted, closing off the perimeter around University Village. A media staging area was established at the parking lot on South Village Boulevard and Village Center Drive.
By 11:05 a.m., FGCU issued a follow-up Eagle Alert confirming that law enforcement had completed its investigation. The package was deemed non-threatening, and the area was declared safe. The entrance to SOVI housing was reopened, and no injuries or further disruptions were reported.
