HERNANDO COUNTY, Florida – A violent altercation at a local motel early this morning left one man with severe neck injuries after being stabbed with a broken salsa bottle, according to Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis.
The incident, which involved up to nine individuals, has prompted an additional investigation into the immigration status of those present.
The stabbing occurred around 3 a.m. at the Days Inn motel off Interstate 75 and State Road 50.
Sheriff Nienhuis reported that three people were directly engaged in the fight, during which a salsa bottle was shattered and used as a weapon.
One victim sustained “very severe” lacerations to the neck and was transported to a trauma hospital, where he is believed to be in stable condition. A second individual suffered superficial cuts but is expected to recover without issue.
The suspect responsible for the stabbing is currently in custody. However, the investigation extends beyond the assault itself.
Authorities are scrutinizing all nine people at the scene for potential immigration violations.
“We believe there’s a good possibility that some, if not all, of those individuals are actually here in the country illegally,” Sheriff Nienhuis stated during a briefing.
Hernando County Sheriff’s Office has collaborated with federal authorities under the 287(g) program, which authorizes local deputies to perform immigration enforcement duties.
In an update, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has requested that three of the individuals be detained.
