BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis today celebrated the launch of the Commission for Public Higher Education (CPHE), a new accrediting body designed to offer an alternative to what he describes as an outdated and ideologically driven accreditation system. The CPHE, comprising a consortium of six state public university systems, aims to prioritize student achievement while steering clear of what DeSantis calls “ideological capture.”
“Florida has set an example for the country in reclaiming higher education—and we’re working to make that success permanent,” Governor DeSantis declared during the announcement.
“That means breaking the activist-controlled accreditation monopoly. Today, I announced that a new accreditor, the Commission for Public Higher Education, will offer an alternative that will break the ideological stronghold. With transparent, rigorous, outcomes-based standards, this accreditor will help ensure the Free State of Florida leads the way in higher education for decades to come.”
The creation of the CPHE marks a significant shift in how public universities are evaluated, moving away from the dominance of traditional accrediting agencies. The consortium, which includes university systems committed to fostering academic excellence, seeks to establish a model that emphasizes measurable student outcomes and efficiency.
