ORLANDO, Florida – Florida is set for dry weather and increasing heat through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast for the aptly-named Sunshine State from Wednesday, May 14 through Saturday, May 17 shows little chance of rain and rising heat index values, impacting cities like Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.
On Saturday, May 17, the chance of precipitation across Florida is very low, with most areas, including Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, seeing probabilities between 0% and 2%. The Florida Keys may see a slightly higher chance at 2%, but dry conditions will dominate statewide.
The heat and dry weather will exacerbates already severe to extreme drought conditions affecting 82% of Florida which increases the risk of wildfires.
The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, will increase over the next few days.
On Wednesday, May 14, values range from 81°F in Destin to 95°F in interior Southwest Florida.
By Thursday, May 15, the heat index will climb to the upper 90s from Jacksonville to Orlando to Tampa.
The peak arrives on Friday, May 16, with most of the state, including Orlando and Sarasota, experiencing a heat index of 95°F to 100°F.
The highest heat indices will be in Southwest Florida from Tampa to Fort Myers to Naples.
South Florida‘ east coast from Miami to Fort Lauderdale to Palm Beach will remain relatively cooler in the low 90s.
Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
