Florida Cucumber Recall Expanded To Walmart, Other Retailers

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. —  The U.S. and Drug Administration () has expanded a recall of whole fresh cucumbers due to a outbreak, with 26 illnesses and nine hospitalizations reported across 15 states.

The cucumbers, grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. in Boynton Beach, Florida, and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. in Delray, Florida, were shipped between April 29 and May 19, 2025, to retailers, wholesalers, food service distributors, and distribution centers in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention () announced the outbreak on May 20, 2025, linking it to the cucumbers. The recalled cucumbers are non-organic and were sold individually or in packages labeled “supers,” “selects,” or “plains.” The now includes additional products sold at , Albertsons, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Big Y Foods, Shaw’s, Star Market, Roundy’s, and Weis Market, such as:

  • Marketside Fresh Cut Cucumber Slices at Walmart in Texas (sold May 13–20, 2025).
  • Harris Teeter fresh cucumbers (UPC 20406200000), Large Vegetable Tray (UPC 7203689327), and Small Vegetable Tray (UPC 7203689328).
  • Big Y Foods sub sandwiches, wraps, and paninis with sliced cucumbers in Massachusetts and Connecticut (sold May 20–21, 2025).
  • Shaw’s and Star Market Greek Salad in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont (UPC 29232900000, best by May 20–24, 2025).
  • Kroger Yummi Sushi products and salads at Roundy’s, including 28-ounce Signature Vegetable Bowl (UPC 639123600172).

The CDC reports 26 illnesses, with cases likely underreported. Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, and dehydration, appearing 6 hours to 6 days after consumption. Most recover within 4–7 days, but severe cases may require hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.

The FDA advises consumers not to consume, sell, or serve the recalled cucumbers or related products. If unsure of the source, discard them and sanitize surfaces they may have touched. When dining out, ask if cucumbers are from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce. Retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Harris Teeter are offering refunds.
