BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded a recall of whole fresh cucumbers due to a Salmonella outbreak, with 26 illnesses and nine hospitalizations reported across 15 states.
The cucumbers, grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. in Boynton Beach, Florida, and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. in Delray, Florida, were shipped between April 29 and May 19, 2025, to retailers, wholesalers, food service distributors, and distribution centers in Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the outbreak on May 20, 2025, linking it to the cucumbers. The recalled cucumbers are non-organic and were sold individually or in packages labeled “supers,” “selects,” or “plains.” The recall now includes additional products sold at Walmart, Albertsons, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Big Y Foods, Shaw’s, Star Market, Roundy’s, and Weis Market, such as:
The CDC reports 26 illnesses, with cases likely underreported. Salmonella symptoms include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, vomiting, and dehydration, appearing 6 hours to 6 days after consumption. Most recover within 4–7 days, but severe cases may require hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.
The FDA advises consumers not to consume, sell, or serve the recalled cucumbers or related products. If unsure of the source, discard them and sanitize surfaces they may have touched. When dining out, ask if cucumbers are from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce. Retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Harris Teeter are offering refunds.
