DeFuniak Springs, FL – On the night of April 16, 2025, a DeFuniak Springs Police officer observed a Florida man operating an excavator in an attempt to take the ATM from Regions Bank, located right by the Police Department.
When the officer attempted contact with the operator, the Florida man fled the scene.
Following the incident, detectives reviewed video footage and identified 43-year-old Christopher Hughes as the suspect.
Hughes later agreed to an interview with police, during which he allegedly confessed to both stealing the excavator and attempting to take the ATM. He reportedly stated, “I would rather rob a bank than work for my brother,” according to the DeFuniak Springs Police Department Facebook page.
A warrant was issued, and Hughes was arrested.
The Florida man now faces charges of Grand Theft of Construction Equipment, Criminal Mischief over $1,000, and Burglary of a Structure with property damage.
Hughes was given a $7,500 bond and remains in custody at the Walton County jail as the investigation continues.
