LaRose Industries has announced a recall of approximately 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem Jewelry Kits sold at major retailers including Target, Marshall’s, T.J. Maxx, and Joann stores, as well as other stores nationwide. They were also available online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and Joann.com from January 2023 through September 2024, with prices ranging from $13 to $36 depending on the kit.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall, citing that the kits contain a resin which, in its liquid form, can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization if inhaled, touched, or ingested.
The hazardous component in the resin is an acrylate known as hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), present in amounts that violate the Federal Hazardous Substances Act’s restrictions for children’s products. The CPSC advises consumers to inspect any jewelry already made with the kits to ensure it is fully cured. Jewelry with liquid or any liquid residue should not be worn and must be stored out of reach of children. Once fully cured, the resin no longer poses a risk.
The recall affects 10 models of the Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits, along with one refill pack. These kits, designed for crafting custom jewelry, include a resin bottle and a UV setting light to harden the resin. They are packaged in rectangular boxes branded with “Cra-Z-Art” and labeled as either “Gemex” or “crazy gel2gem.” Consumers can identify the recalled products by checking the item numbers and UPC codes printed on the bottom of the packaging. The affected products and their details are as follows:
