KEY WEST, Florida – An 11-foot, 2-inch Great White male shark weighing over 700 pounds was tracked off of the Florida Keys at 2:01 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025.
This sub-adult white shark named *Dold’ was tagged with a satellite transponder by OCEARCH shark researchers 45 miles off the coast of the Florida-Georgia border in February 2025.
Dold is named in honor of Dr. Christopher Dold of SeaWorld, a key figure in ocean conservation.
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) population has been growing along the U.S. East Coast, according to a study by NOAA Fisheries.
The study also found that great white sharks occur primarily between Massachusetts and New Jersey during the summer, off Florida during winter, and with a broad distribution along the U.S. East Coast during spring and fall.

In addition to spotting the telltale shark fins, fish jumping out of water or sea birds hovering at the surface of the water could indicate the presence of feeding sharks.
Always swim near a lifeguard area (their elevated position on a lifeguard tower is better for shark spotting) and pay attention to warning flags.
