ORLANDO, Florida – During a press conference in Orlando on Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a proposal to give Florida homeowners a $1,000 rebate in 2025.
“Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government. Constitutional protections for Florida homeowners require approval of the voters in 2026,” DeSantis said in a follow-up post on X.
“In the meantime, Floridians need relief. I am today proposing a plan that will result in—on average—$1,000 rebate checks for each homestead as a discount on their property taxes. If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session.”
As an alternative of property tax relief for homeowners, Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-Miami) announced a proposal to cut Florida’s sales tax from 6% to 5.25%.
Desantis however, emphasized that his property tax relief targets Florida residents while a reduction in the state sales tax benefits visitors to the Sunshine State.
“I want Canadian tourists and Brazilian tourists subsidizing the state,” said DeSantis. “I don’t want to give Canadians a tax cut.”
