LAKELAND, Florida – Anglers across Florida can cast their lines without a license during the state’s upcoming license-free freshwater fishing weekend, set for April 5 and 6, 2025.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced the event as part of its ongoing effort to promote fishing and outdoor recreation among residents and visitors alike.
For these two days, no fishing license will be required to enjoy Florida’s vast network of freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams. Whether fishing from the shore or a boat, participants of all skill levels can take advantage of this opportunity to experience one of the state’s most cherished pastimes. Typically, a one-year resident freshwater fishing license costs $17, making this a budget-friendly chance to try the sport or introduce it to friends and family.
While the license requirement is waived, the FWC reminds anglers that all other regulations—such as seasons, bag limits, and size restrictions—will remain in effect to ensure sustainable fishing practices.
To enhance the weekend, the FWC is hosting family-friendly events on Saturday, April 5. At the Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Lakeland (3829 Tenoroc Mine Road), a fishing day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. will offer free lunch, bait, and loaner rods for youth 15 and under, though pre-registration is required by April 4 at 5 p.m. (call 863-648-3200). Parents or guardians must accompany young participants.
Meanwhile, the Florida Bass Conservation Center in Webster (3583 County Road 788) will host an event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing a free lunch but requiring attendees to bring their own gear and bait.
A second license-free freshwater fishing weekend is slated for June 14 and 15, 2025, giving anglers another chance to enjoy the waiver later in the year.
