DeSantis: Property Tax Cut, Not Sales Tax Cut, Benefits Florida Residents More

, Florida – After Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez (R-) announced a proposal to cut Florida’s sales tax from 6% to 5.25%, took to social media to advocate for a cut to poperty taxes instead of sales taxes.

“Republicans in the Florida House voted to undo millions of dollars in cost savings that I instituted last June when I signed the budget—and have voted to undo more than $60 million in cost savings over the past two months. This represents misplaced priorities,” DeSantis posted on X.

“Floridians deserve action on protecting medical freedom, strengthening laws to combat illegal , relieving condo residents of higher costs, and enacting a Florida-first tax package that provides real relief to Florida residents on their property taxes.”

Critics of the sales tax cut argue that Florida’s sales tax captures revenue from visiting tourists thereby lessening the burden on Florida residents, while an increase in Florida’s Homestead Exemption to lower property taxes targets only residents as the beneficiaries of a tax cut.

“Florida homeowners are struggling with increased tax assessments based on values that are often unrealized. Reducing this burden on homeowners is the best way to provide relief to Florida taxpayers. Homeowners are the ones getting hit the hardest—they need to be at the top of the list for this much needed reform,” Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis added.

“Property tax relief is the way to go,” DeSantis concluded
