DeSantis Orders Flags Flown At Half-Staff In Florida On Friday, March 7, 2025

, Florida – has ordered U.S. and Florida state flags to be flown at half-staff on Friday, March 7, 2025, in memory of Lincoln Díaz-Balart, a prominent Cuban-American leader and former U.S. Representative who passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 70 after a battle with cancer.

In a memorandum issued Thursday, Governor DeSantis directed the tribute to take place from sunrise to sunset at the State Capitol in and all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout Miami-. The order was addressed to Brian Fienemann, Director of Management and Development; Anthony Rodriguez, Chair of County Commissioners for Miami-Dade County; and Francis Suarez, Mayor of Miami.

Lincoln Díaz-Balart leaves behind a legacy of dedicated public service. First elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1986, he served until 1989 before transitioning to the Florida Senate, where he completed a term from 1989 to 1992. In 1992, Díaz-Balart was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Florida’s 21st Congressional District with distinction until his retirement in 2011.

A towering figure in the Cuban-American community, Díaz-Balart was widely recognized for his staunch opposition to Communism and the Castro regime in Cuba. Throughout his career, he championed democratic values both in the United States and internationally, earning respect as a principled advocate for freedom.

“To honor the memory of Lincoln Díaz-Balart and his commitment to public service,” Governor DeSantis wrote, “I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff.” The gesture reflects the state’s gratitude for Díaz-Balart’s contributions to Florida and the nation.

Díaz-Balart’s passing marks the end of an era for many in Miami-Dade County and beyond, where his leadership and unwavering resolve left an indelible mark on the fight for liberty and justice.
