Trudeau Response To Trump Tariffs On Canada: Boycott Florida Orange Juice, U.S. Vacations
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau |
ORLANDO, Florida - In response to U.S. President Donald Trump's recent imposition of a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will implement retaliatory tariffs of 25% on $155 billion worth of American goods. These countermeasures will be introduced in phases, starting with $30 billion when the U.S. tariffs take effect, and expanding by an additional $125 billion after 21 days.
Trudeau also called on Canadians to do their part and "Choose Canada."
"It might mean checking the labels at the supermarket and picking Canadian made products. It might mean picking Canadian Rye over Kentucky Bourbon, or foregoing Florida orange juice altogether," said Trudeau during a televised speech Saturday evening.
"It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada and explore the many national and provincial parks, historical sites, and tourist destinations our country has to offer."
According to the state's tourism agency Visit Florida, 2.4 million Canadians visited the Sunshine State last year, or about 2% of the 109 million total visitors.
In 2021-22, the U.S. exported 97.8 million liters of orange juice to Canada valued at $124.2 million. Florida continued to be the most represented state in the Canadian market, accounting for around 60% of total U.S. orange juice value and volume, according to floridacitrus.org.
