Canned Tuna Sold At Florida Publix, Costco, Walmart Stores Recalled

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a voluntary recall of select canned tuna products due to a potential risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced. The affected products, sold under the Genova®, Van Camp’s®, H-E-B, and Trader Joe’s® brands, may have compromised seals due to a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull-tab lids.

While no illnesses have been reported, the company is recalling these products out of an abundance of caution. Consumers are urged not to use the recalled tuna, even if it appears or smells normal, as Clostridium botulinum can cause botulism, a potentially fatal foodborne illness.

Recalled Products and Distribution

The affected canned tuna was distributed across multiple retailers, including:

• H-E-B label – Texas
• Trader Joe’s label – Various states, including Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Virginia
• Genova 7 oz. – Costco (Florida and Georgia)
• Genova 5 oz. – Multiple retailers, including Kroger, Walmart, and Publix in several states
• Van Camp’s label – Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey

Each recalled product has a specific UPC, lot code, and “Best if Used By” date, all listed on the bottom of the cans. Consumers are encouraged to check their pantries and dispose of any affected cans.

Consumers in possession of recalled products can return them to the retailer for a full refund, discard them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement.
