Desantis Calls For Special Session On Condominium Crisis, Hurricane Relief, Immigration
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis |
TALLAHASSEE, Florida - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for a special session of the Florida Legislature to address illegal immigration, Florida's condominium crisis caused by recent regulations, relief for hurricane victims, and constitutional amendment initiatives.
Support for Trump's Deportation Policies: The session aims to align Florida's policies with those of the incoming Trump administration, particularly focusing on mass deportation efforts. DeSantis has expressed intentions to repeal laws that provide incentives like in-state tuition rates for undocumented students. He also threatened to remove local officials who try to frustrate deportation efforts.
"Today, I called for a special session of the Florida legislature the week of January 27 to prepare Florida to lead on the Trump Administration’s deportation program. We will allocate resources and ensure state and local officials in Florida are supporting these efforts," DeSantis posted on X.
Petition Fraud and Constitutional Amendment Initiatives: DeSantis wants to reform the process of constitutional amendment initiatives, particularly in response to what he perceives as fraudulent activities related to petitions for such amendments. There's a push to make it harder for citizens to bypass the legislature through ballot initiatives.
The special session is scheduled to take place starting the week of January 27, 2025, before the regular legislative session which is set to begin in March.
