WASHINGTON, D.C. - An American Airlines regional jet operated by PSA Airlines collided midair with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter around 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, as the jet was approaching Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
The passenger jet, a Bombardier CRJ700, was carrying 64 individuals, while the helicopter had three personnel on board. Both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River.

Emergency responders have recovered more than a dozen bodies from the river, and a massive search operation is ongoing to locate additional victims. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the collision.
As a result of the incident, Reagan National Airport is expected to remain closed through at least 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for flight status updates.
"The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn," President Donald Trump posted on TruthSocial.com.
"Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!"
