This operation was prompted by a 911 call about suspicious vans, leading to the arrest of the smugglers, one of Cuban descent and the other Puerto Rican. The migrants were subsequently handed over to Homeland Security and U.S. Border Patrol for further investigation.
Two weeks prior to this incident, on January 17, 2025, Coral Gables police disrupted another smuggling operation where 31 migrants, predominantly from China, were found in a U-Haul van following a report of a possible abduction. This led to the arrest of three Cuban nationals suspected of smuggling. The operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, and the migrants were from various countries including China, Ecuador, and Brazil.
