ST. PETERSBURG, Florida - Bruhat Soma, a 12-year-old from St. Petersburg, Florida, won the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The winning word was "abseil," meaning "a descent in mountaineering by means of a rope looped over a projection above."
Soma won the first place prize of $50,000 in cash.
Faizan Zaki of Texas came in second place to win $25,000.
Shrey Parikh of North Carolina and Ananya Prassanna of California tied for third place to win $12,500 each.
