14-year-old Girl Charged With Grandmother's Murder

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Florida - Detectives with the Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit have arrested a 14-year-old girl in connection with the murder of her 79-year-old grandmother.


At approximately 12:26 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to a call about an unresponsive female at 4191 N.W. 41st St. in Lauderdale Lakes. 


Once on scene, emergency crews met with the victim's son, who stated he went to visit a friend and left his mother, Yevheniia Koval, at the residence with his 14-year-old daughter. 


When he returned home, he found his mother unresponsive on the floor with multiple bruises on her body.


Paramedics transported the 79-year-old victim to Broward Health Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. 


Investigators with BSO's Crime Scene and Homicide units responded to investigate. 


According to detectives, an autopsy performed by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the victim's death a homicide. 


Through investigative methods, detectives identified the 14-year-old granddaughter as the suspect in the murder. 


The juvenile, who had been admitted into the hospital the day of the incident for medical clearance, was taken into custody on Friday, May 24 and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) for processing. 


She faces one count of second-degree murder.
