Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Miami-Dade and Broward Counties

MIAMI, FL – The National Weather Service in Miami has issued an urgent Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northern and East Central Miami-Dade County, as well as Southern Broward County in southeastern Florida. 


The warning is in effect until 11:30 AM EST on Sunday, February 4, 2024.


At 10:49 AM EST, severe thunderstorms were identified along a line extending from 10 miles northwest of Miccosukee Resort to locations near Country Walk and Royal Palm Ranger, moving east at a swift pace of 40 mph.


The primary hazards associated with these severe thunderstorms include wind gusts of up to 60 mph and penny-sized hail. Residents in the warned areas should be prepared for potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees.


Locations expected to be impacted by these severe weather conditions encompass Miami, Hialeah, Miramar, Miami Beach, Homestead, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, South Miami, Surfside, Homestead General Airport, Miami Gardens, Turkey Point, Hallandale, Homestead Miami Speedway, Black Point, The Redland, Kendall, North Miami, Doral, and North Miami Beach.

Residents are urged to remain alert for the possibility of tornadoes, as they can quickly develop from severe thunderstorms. If a tornado is spotted, it is advised to seek shelter immediately in a small central room within a sturdy structure. Additionally, individuals should move to the lowest floor of a building for protection against high winds.


These severe thunderstorms are also accompanied by torrential rainfall, raising the risk of flash flooding. Motorists are cautioned against driving through flooded roadways.


A Tornado Watch is currently in effect until 2:00 PM EST for southeastern Florida, adding to the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions during this weather event.
