The cellular outage has caused smartphones, including Android and iPhone, to go into the no service state of SOS mode.

What Does SOS Mean On An iPhone?

If you see SOS or "SOS only" in the status bar, your device isn't connected to a network, but you can still make emergency calls, according to Apple. This feature is available in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

Solar Flares Before Outage

NASA announced that the Sun emitted two strong solar flares, the first one peaking at 6:07 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Wednesday, February 21, 2024, and the second peaking at 1:32 a.m. EST, Thursday, February 22, 2024.

Whether the solar flares caused the cell phone outage across the United States causing AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cricket, Boost, and other cell phone service provider networks to go down around 3:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, February 22, 2024, remains to be determined.
