Tornado Warning Issued For Tampa
TAMPA, Florida – The National Weather Service in Tampa, Florida has issued a tornado warning for for Central Pinellas County and Central Hillsborough County in west-central Florida.
This warning is in effect until 4:30 PM EST on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, in response to a severe thunderstorm with the potential to produce a tornado.
At 4:10 PM EST, the storm, capable of generating a tornado, was identified over Pinellas Park, moving swiftly east at a rate of 45 mph. The primary hazard associated with this storm is the potential for tornadoes, posing a significant threat to those without proper shelter.
Mobile homes are particularly vulnerable and may sustain damage or destruction. Additionally, widespread damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees is likely.
This dangerous storm is expected to impact Tampa, St. Petersburg, Feather Sound, MacDill Air Force Base, Gandy, and West and East Lealman around 4:15 PM EST.
Other locations in the path of this tornadic thunderstorm include Ybor City, South Tampa, Soho, University of Tampa, Weedon Island State Preserve, Venetian Isles, Sawgrass Lake Park, Lealman, Peter O Knight Airport, and Kenneth City.
Residents in the warned area are strongly advised to take cover immediately. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, and avoid windows. If outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, seek the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
