U.S. and U.K. Warships Shoot Down 15 Drones Over Red Sea
U.S. and U.K. naval forces successfully intercepted a total of 15 drones over the Red Sea, with a U.S. warship taking down 14 suspected attack drones and a Royal Navy destroyer thwarting another drone targeting commercial ships.
On Saturday, the U.S. Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS CARNEY (DDG 64) carried out a precise operation in the early morning hours of December 16 (local Sanna time).
The destroyer was operating in the Red Sea when it engaged and successfully shot down 14 unmanned aerial systems.
The drones were launched in a coordinated drone wave from areas under Houthi control in Yemen.
U.S. Central Command tweeted that these unmanned aerial systems were identified as one-way attack drones, and the swift response resulted in the drones being neutralized without causing any damage to ships in the vicinity or reported injuries.
U.S. Central Command reported that regional Red Sea partners were promptly alerted to the imminent threat.
Also over the Red Sea, the HMS Diamond, considered one of the Royal Navy's most advanced warships, intercepted and neutralized a potential threat to merchant vessels in the Red Sea using a Sea Viper missile.
"Alongside @RoyalNavy, we remain steadfast in safeguarding the lawful passage of ships in the region." the UK Ministry of Defence tweeted.
